The center was founded in 1985 by a group of parents who wanted to provide their children with a place to explore and learn about science. The founding members, who were all teachers, donated the time they had left over from teaching elementary school so that their children could continue to explore science. The museum initially opened on weekends only, but the founders soon realized that the space needed more hours for children to be able to visit. In 1987, the museum became open seven days a week. Today, it is open every day except Tuesday and Wednesday for maintenance.

This educational initiative has grown over the years as well. From 1985 until today, the lab has acquired more than 100 interactive exhibits that can be used by both children and adults. Visitors can play with toys from different eras or make their own inventions using various materials like magnets and circuits. In 2000, the Children’s Science Center of Fairfax Museum partnered with Fairfax County Public Schools to provide an opportunity for students through 6th grade to visit during school hours on Fridays. This partnership allowed students who may not have had access to a science museum before to now have access on school grounds!

The Children’s Science Center offers a variety of programs for children and their families. One of the most popular programs is the Hands-On Nature Exploration program. This program is designed for children in pre-kindergarten to second grade, and is offered year round on Saturdays from 10am-12pm. The hands-on exploration program invites children to use their senses, explore natural habitats and create new friends along the way. With The Lab as a backdrop, children are encouraged to explore nature by using their five senses and interacting with animals in their natural environment. There are also opportunities for arts and crafts while exploring the museum's exhibits.
