Kutner Park

December 22, 2023

Kutner Park is a park in Fairfax, Virginia. It is the site of the Kutner Mansion. The park is located in northern Fairfax County, near the Greenway and the Fairfax Connector Trail. It is in close proximity to the historic D.C. suburb of Chevy Chase. It is also near the Washington, D  D.C. suburb of Annandale.  The park contains the Kutner Mansion and the adjacent Bird Sanctuary. The mansion was built by financier and philanthropist Joseph H. Kutner. It is a Colonial Revival style mansion that was built between 1914 and 1924.  In 1932, Kutner donated the mansion to the City of Fairfax. The house was restored and opened as a park in 1993.

The park offers a variety of activities for visitors. There is a walking trail with benches and views of the mansion, which is open to the public on Tuesdays from 1pm-4pm. It is also an access point for the Fairfax Connector Trail, which runs through the park. The park includes picnic tables, grills and play equipment. There are two playgrounds in the park that were built in 1993 and are handicapped accessible. They offer swings, climbing features, and slides. The mansion has a small gift shop that sells knickknacks and souvenirs related to the house and history of Fairfax County. It is open from 8am to 7pm during daylight savings time days but hours vary seasonally.

The grounds of the park contain tall, dense trees and a variety of wildflowers. The grounds are also home to numerous birds, including red-tailed hawks, white-throated sparrows, and ospreys.  There is a playground in the park where children can play outside and experience nature. There is also an open field that can be used for soccer or other sports activities. The park includes a multi-purpose area with tables, chairs and grills for picnics or cookouts.

The mansion is a three-story, 30 foot wide and 45 foot deep, brick building with a hipped roof. The building is topped by four stone chimneys. The interior features mahogany flooring and plaster walls.  As the park has been restored and opened as a park in 1993, many of the items on display are not original to the Mansion.

The pool at the park is a large, rectangular-shaped swimming pool that was built in the 1960s. It has been renovated many times since then. The pool includes a shallow end with a diving board and a deep end with two slides.

The gardens at Kutner Park are the site of colorful plantings and offer a peaceful place to relax. They were designed by landscape architect Robert H. Schad, Jr. The park contains a variety of plants and trees that are native to Virginia including crepe myrtles, black walnuts, oaks and white pines.  There is also a large cherry tree in the southern part of the park. It is one of only two cherry trees in Northern Virginia and it was planted in 1884 by Joseph H. Kutner who donated it from his estate at Mount Vernon. There is also a herb garden located near the mansion with lavender, mint, thyme, lemon balm and more plants that can be used for cooking or healthy living.

A nice day out at Kutner Park can be a great way to spend an afternoon. The Mansion at Kutner Park is a great place to explore, and you could also make a day out of checking out the gardens and pools. There are activities for children and adults alike, so be sure to bring the whole family!
