Brief History of Fairfax

Both the city of Fairfax and Fairfax County are named after the Sixth Lord Fairfax, Thomas Fairfax, who was given more than 5 million acres of land in 1719 in northern Virginia. In 1805, the city was originally called the Town of Providence. It was founded throughout the Fairfax County Courthouse which was established at the corner of Little River Turnpike and Ox Road in 1800. It was in the late 19th century during the Civil War's crossroad conflict that the area was transformed into a commerce hub which bolstered the city's economy.
